Speedway: Chris Mills vows to hit top gear after sealing switch to Glasgow Tigers

SPEEDWAY star Chris Mills has vowed to rack up the miles - and the points - in a bid to help Glasgow Tigers defend their Premier League title.

The Essex-based rider was signed last Wednesday along with Filip Sitera after fed-up Glasgow bosses axed stuttering duo Jade Mudgway and Robert Ksiezak.

And the new boys opened their Ashfield accounts with promising displays in Sunday's 49-41 victory over much-fancied Redcar Bears.

Mills, formerly of Ipswich Witches, scored three points but could have had a whole lot more had it not been for a dodgy chain and an unfortunate slip.

However, the 28-year-old speedster is eager to make his name at Glasgow and won't allow weekly 860-mile round trips put him off.

He said: "This is a new challenge for me but one I relish.

"I got a message from Stewart last Monday asking me to sign and I rang him back within 20 minutes and said I wanted to give it a go.

"It's a long way from Essex. It's 430 miles each way so that's 12 hours in the van each week.

"But I will give it a go and see if I enjoy it and, one thing's for sure, I will give it 110 per cent while I am here. If that turns out to be the whole season then all the better.

"It's a bonus to be racing alongside someone of Joe Screen's calibre.

"Screeny has a lot of experience and I have asked him about set-ups and other things already so hopefully we can form a good partnership.

"I love his style of racing. Ever since I was young I would watch him. He is a good rider, a racer, and that's how I like to think of myself - as a racer."

Screen was again the star man as Glasgow took all three points against Redcar, notching a 15 point maximum despite struggling with an ankle injury.

The skipper was backed-up by James Grieves and Josh Grajczonek who both scored 11 in an entertaining afternoon's racing.

This Sunday Glasgow will attempt to claw back a 14-point deficit in the Knockout Cup against Plymouth at Ashfield, 4pm start. The winners of the tie will face either Edinburgh or Rye House in the quarter final.

The Tigers are also at Berwick on Saturday night in their first away league fixture of the season.
