Possible arson attack at derelict factory closes city centre street
FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a large blaze at a derelict factory which is believed to have been started deliberately.
Crews were called to the old Fyfe & McGrouther building in Kennedy Street, in Glasgow city centre, just after 3am today.
Group Commander Gary Wallace, from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service, said they were faced with a "well developed" fire which had broken through the roof.
He said firefighters created protective "water curtains" to prevent the flames spreading to nearby premises belonging to John Lewis and Tedesco.
They used two high-reach appliances with water jets and crews wearing breathing apparatus entered parts of the factory to bring the blaze under control.
The Fyfe & McGrouther factory was already due for demolition before the fire started.
Kennedy Street is closed between Kennedy Path and Lister Street.
