Police launch inquiry after teenager is raped near busy area of west end

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a teenage girl was raped near an area of busy clubs and bars.

The 19-year-old was grabbed by a man as she walked in Lilybank Gardens in the west end of Glasgow at about 2am on Saturday morning.

He raped her and then ran off into Ashton Lane.

Strathclyde Police appealed for information about the incident.

Detective Inspector Alan Brown said: "This has been a very traumatic experience for this young woman and I would like to reassure the public that my officers are conducting extensive enquiries in the local area in an attempt to trace the person responsible for this attack as soon as possible.

"The area around Lilybank Gardens was particularly busy with people coming out of bars and clubs, and I therefore would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the suspect hanging about either prior to the attack or perhaps running off afterwards."

The suspect is described as white, between 5ft 7ins and 5ft 8ins tall and slim. He had a clear, pale complexion and local accent. He was in his early to mid-20's and had short light, possibly blond, hair.

The man was wearing a black zipped hooded top and dark coloured tracksuit or jogging bottoms.
