New subway park & ride scheme launched to reduce congestion on city's roads

A NEW park and ride scheme has been introduced in Glasgow in a bid to reduce rush hour congestion.

Carparks.com, the car park management division of Airlink Group, have joined forces with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce to promote the 'park and ride season ticket' on the city's iconic underground network.

The initiative is also designed to save passengers money while encouraging a greater uptake in public transport.

Issued as either four, 12 or 24 week passes, the tickets can provide up to 40 per cent savings for commuters.

Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “Reducing congestion and encouraging public transport usage are key priorities for Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, highlighted by our endorsement of the city's bid to become European Green Capital City 2015.

"Any initiative which seeks to encourage ease of access to the city centre is positive for Glasgow's business community, reaffirming our status as the UK's number one shopping destination outside of London."

John McGlynn, Carparks.com company chairman, said the initiative worked out at less than £2 a day for users.

He added: "We need car parking alternatives such as this to give more options to our customers. We all know how expensive car parking in the city centre can be."

SPT chief executive Gordon Maclennan, said: "Not only can using the Subway park and ride facilities ease the daily commute, they also go a long way towards reducing congestion and carbon emissions in Glasgow."

Subway Park and Ride Season tickets on offer are available online at:  www.spt.co.uk/subway/tickets and can be topped up at any of SPT’s Park and Ride pay stations at Bridge Street, Kelvinbridge and Shields Road.
