Eight people in hospital following tenement blaze in Maryhill

FOUR children and four adults were taken to hospital after being rescued from a burning building in Maryhill this morning.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at a four-storey block of flats in Acre Drive at 3am.

A man and a woman, who were rescued from a ground-floor property where the fire started, were rushed to the city's Western Infirmary and were said to be "giving cause for concern".

Two other adults and four children, all suffering from slight smoke inhalation, received oxygen at the scene before being taken to Yorkhill Hospital for precautionary checks.

Fire crews are said to have battled through "severe heat and dense smoke" to reach the casualties.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and Strathclyde Police have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the fire.
