Jobs boost for east end as supermarket giant look to open at Forge Retail Park

HUNDREDS of jobs are on their way to Glasgow's east end as a battle between supermarket giants looks set to break out.

Tesco will create a new superstore in the former Big W Woolworths store at the Forge Retail Park, creating 350 jobs for the area.

After three years lying empty since the firm went into administration, the store will compete with the Asda just a few hundreds yards away.

Contractors are on site and the Tesco is reportedly set to open by Christmas.

Last year, Tesco in Maryhill had 90 applications for 16 posts when it opened.

Tesco said its new east end location could feature environmentally friendly features such as a heat-saving lobby and energy efficient bakery and refrigeration.

Another Tesco store is planned for Glasgow Harbour with hopes for a further 500 jobs. An application has been submitted to the council for two sites which would include a supermarket, housing development and office space.
