City shows appreciation for war veterans on Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day

THOUSANDS of Glaswegians honoured the role played by the nation's military as they celebrated Armed Forces Day.

A parade was held in the city last Saturday which saw Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon join huge crowds in George Square.

The thousands of Glaswegians attending were all keen to show their appreciation of the efforts of the country's sailors, soldiers and airmen. Scottish jazz band That Swing Sensation provided live music and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society also performed.

One of the highlights saw the World War Two style troupe the Kennedy Cupcakes give an authentic period dance display.

More than 500 veterans and servicemen marched past the City Chambers to the main square for a short service at the Cenotaph.

The servicemen were also honoured with two flypasts - one from an RAF Tornado jet and the second from an RAF Dakota, the iconic troop transport aircraft which was used throughout the Second World War.

Bailie Alan Stewart, Glasgow's deputy provost, added his voice to the many celebrating the role of the armed forces.

He said: "We can never forget the contributions of all servicemen, who fight to preserve our security and our way of life.

"George Square is a fitting setting for us all to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the two world wars."

Anti-war campaigners in Glasgow used the occasion to reinforce awareness of the economic and human cost of the Afghanistan conflict, urging politicians to bring troops home.

Meanwhile the council announced a new resource to help servicemen and women, past and present.

Glasgow City Council's Helping Heroes service will provide a one-stop shop facility to advise and support military personnel, veterans and their carers.

The project is designed to help those who are serving or have left the armed forces find housing, employment and benefit and debt advice to help ensure they receive the money and services they are entitled to.

Bailie Tommy Morrison, Glasgow City Council's Veterans Champion, said: "The team is in place, located just across the road at 280 George Street and there is also a telephone service for those seeking help."
