Sophie, five, from Clarkston, Glasgow, was at the Shell Education Service family science day at the city's Tall Ship.

The event saw youngsters tackle a range of investigations, as well as getting to try fun activities such as plate spinning.

They explored areas including electricity, energy transfer, forces and motion and materials. Meg Post, who led one of the workshops, said: "The inquisitive nature of children and the excitement generated when they are faced with investigating science was there for all to see.

"It is very important that primary school children's interest in science continues into their secondary education and beyond and we hope that by having fun this will happen."
