Christmas shoppers to get free parking boost in Glasgow

SHOPPERS in Glasgow are to get an early Christmas gift from the city this year thanks to a free parking initiative.

Santa might still be 15 weeks away but the festive spirit already seems to be falling on officials at City Parking (Glasgow) LLP.

The city councils arms-length company will offer free Sunday parking at its five multi-storey car parks in the run up to Christmas.

And city leaders hope the move might encourage even more people to do their shopping in Glasgow this year.

Councillor Paul Carey, Chair of City Parking (Glasgow) LLP, said: For three consecutive Sundays on  December 6, 13 and 20 we are offering free use of our multi-storey car parks.

This means over 2,500 car park spaces will be available for shoppers and visitors to the city at our Cadogan Street, Charing Cross, Cambridge Street, Concert Square and Dunsdavale Car Parks.

The group recently completed a s2 million investment programme at these sites which have the latest ticketing technology with flexible payment facilities, brighter lighting and 24hour manned CCTV and help points.

Cllr Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: We want to encourage people into the city and to make it easier for them in the run up to Christmas is fantastic.

"Free parking available on the three Sundays before Christmas will certainly add to Glasgows success as a thriving retail sector.

Car parking is crucial to keep commerce buoyant and its also a fantastic opportunity for people to experience the excellent facilities City Parking has to offer.
