North Kelvin Meadow rebels in running for garden award

A CITY meadow cultivated by a bunch of controversial guerrilla gardeners is in the running for a Beautiful Scotland 2009 Neighbourhood Award.

But the irony is that Glasgow City Council took legal action to stop North Kelvin Meadow group from restoring the run-down green space in Maryhill.

An eviction order preventing two members from planting vegetable beds and installing bat boxes was upheld at the city's sheriff court recently.

The allotments, wildflower meadow, fruit garden and composting facilities have been created by local people from the derelict wasteland on the former Clouston Street playing fields, which the council wants to sell as a site for flats.
