Asperger's
A CITY college student who suffers from Asperger's Syndrome says the level of support he received has inspired him to continue studying.
Derek Darvell, pictured, is currently enrolled in the NQ Theatre Arts course at Stow College.
Now the 24-year-old has been offered a place at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) next year.
But he hasn't decided whether to take them up on the offer or stay at the college.
Derek, from Hamilton, Lanarkshire, said: "I enrolled in the NQ Theatre Arts course last year and I absolutely loved it.
"I have always been interested in acting, and I wanted to improve my communication skills.
"The course was quite demanding with lots of dancing, acting and voice work.
"Yet it has been great fun and I have really built up my confidence.
"I have been offered a place on a technical theatre course at Stow, and an acting course at RSAMD, which is fantastic. I'll have to give it a bit of thought before I make any decisions.
"I had completed courses at various colleges before coming to Stow College, but I never felt I had the level of support that I needed.
"Stow College has an agreement with the National Autistic Society Scotland (NAS Scotland) to provide support for students with autism and Asperger syndrome."
Margaret Cooke, support for learning advisor at the college, said: "Derek has really flourished this year and it's been really satisfying for everyone in the Hub to see him progressing academically and socially.
"This year we have over 200 students on Extended Learning Support.
"We try to meet with prospective students, who may have any barriers to their learning, during the summer before they start their course."
