City council set to float idea for new hotel on the River Clyde

DINERS at a new city centre hotel could be going overboard for meals and drinks in a floating restaurant and bar on the River Clyde.

The eye-catching development lies between Stockwell Street and the Saltmarket centre with plans including a land-based hotel, studio and offices.

Glasgow City Council, which owns the land adjacent to the waterfront between Stockwell Street and the Saltmarket, is in partnership with city-based developer Firthport, who own of the hotel site.

They will redevelop a site at the Clydestreet-Bridgegate area, where land is owned by both partners.

The hotel will have adjoining water-based facilities including a floating bar and restaurant with a new pedestrian area along the waterfront with floating offices and studios.

A council spokesman said: "These plans are at a very early stage, but the developers are prepared to commit substantial resources to the project subject to the council being willing to contribute its land into a partnership agreement."

Councillor Philip Braat, deputy executive member for the council's Business and the Economy unit said: "This project has the potential to be a key development for both the Clyde and the city centre.

"The area around this site is being transformed, and its successful regeneration would provide a link between Custom House Quay and Glasgow Green."
