All bets are off as bookie has Govanhill application turned down

A GLASGOW MSP has welcomed a planning committee decision to block a William Hill betting shop application for the city's Alison Street.

Bashir Ahmad said it was the right decision because there are already eight bookies' shops in the neighbourhood.

The vote was preceded by a period of community activism against the opening of the betting shop.

That included a petition signed by more than 300 people, discussion at local neighbourhood groups, and initial explorations of alternative uses for the premises, such as a community resource centre and cafe.

Mr Ahmad said: "Govanhill community realises that another betting shop would be detrimental to the area.

"I welcome the vote against the planning application because it gives community organisations the opportunity to explore alternative use of the premises, and highlights the present climate of community cooperation for improvement in Govanhill."

Southside Central councillor Jahangir Hanif has also welcomed the decision.

He said: "I welcome the planning committee's decision, having put in an objection to the betting shop in October last year Iamglad this has prevailed.

"What we need are more friendly businesses which will enhance the image of Govanhill and encourage positive change rather than something which could cause more problems."
