Glasgow North-East by-election: Arthur Scargill sounds SLP voice

MINERS' strike firebrand Arthur Scargill and television comic Ricky Tomlinson will join the Socialist Labour Party's campaign trail in Glasgow next week.

Louise McDaid, chairperson of the Farepak Victims' Committee, will stand as the party's candidate in the November 12 poll and has won the backing of Scargill, the party's national leader.

In this year's European elections, the SLP doubled its vote in ten of the eleven regions it contested.

Scargill commented: "It was important that we stand in this by-election, falling as it does between the European and General elections, so that we maintain our momentum and continuity and to offer a real socialist alternative to the people of Glasgow North East."

Scargill, Ricky Tomlinson and Louise McDaid will speak at a public meeting in Possilpark Community Centre next Tuesday.
