German ace Kat Lindner is Glasgow City's secret weapon as they prepare for Bayern Munich clash

Kat Lindner

KAT LINDNER can think of a million reasons why Glasgow City should have no chance against the mighty Bayern Munich in the UEFA Women's Champions League.

But City's German star is clinging on to the one hope which might just give the Scottish champions a chance of upsetting her compatriots on July 30.

City were pulled out of the hat alongside the Bundesliga giants in Group A in last week's draw with the sides set to meet on July 30 in Lithuania.

Making up the group are Georgian champions Norchi Dinamoeli and Gintra, the champions of Lithuania who will host the Group A matches.

And while moneybags Munich will be hot favourites to emerge victorious, Lindner insists her side can pull off a stunning shock with the help of some insider knowledge.

She said: "Womens' football in Germany is miles ahead of Scotland and the rest of Europe to be honest and for that reason nobody will expect us to win.

"The German FA are pouring millions of pounds into the game especially as the next World Cup is being held there.

"As a result their top teams are paying good money to attract the best players and it's hard to compete. Some of their players can live off the wages they earn from football.

"Compare that to ourselves where the players actually pay to play and you can see the difference.

"While the Germans are having money thrown at them from their FA we aren't and we have to watch things like whether we can afford another crate of isotonic drinks.

"But I still won't say this is mission impossible."

Indeed Lindner, a part-time lecturer at Glasgow University, has been swatting up on Munich and reckons her knowledge of the German game could come in handy.

The former Frankfurt player, 29, said: "Bayern weren't even in the Bundesliga when I played there but they are one of the top teams now.

"I played alongside their midfielder Tanja Worle for the German under 16, 18 and 21 sides and, although we have lost contact, I know she will still be a very dangerous player.

"Bayern will be very technical and will be dangerous coming forward.

"But our management will have us prepared throughly and really well organised. If we can contain them then you never know, we could pull off a shock."

Glasgow City management are desperately trying to raise the s12,000 it will cost to participate in this year's tournament.
