Eating Out: Glasserie @ Mansion House

MANSION House opened up earlier this year – in the site of former Merchant City favourite Tiger Tiger.

Designed as an all-in-one style entertainment venue, it boasts Karaoke, Jongleurs comedy club, retro disco Groovy Wonderland and a huge choice of bars.

But my visit with a pal on a Friday night was for a different attraction under the same roof – the venue’s Glasserie restaurant.

Located on the upper floor, the décor at the Glasserie manages to be both formal enough to feel special without being too stuffy.

There are glitzy chandeliers and an interesting mix of pastel colours and comfortable-but-stylish chairs.

The atmosphere was bustling without being over the top.

Browsing the menu, it was obvious there was a strong Scottish influence. I opted to start things off with pan seared scallops and black pudding, which came with peashoots and lemon butter sauce (£6.95). The scallops were light but tasty and I enjoyed dipping them into the accompanying sauce.

Black pudding was also ordered across the table, but this time in a warm salad with crisp bacon and gently poached egg (£4.95). And I was jealous of my friend’s choice as it looked even better.

My main course was a twist on a classic – a four-ounce beef fillet served with haggis mash, steamed broccoli and pepper sauce (£17.50).

The steak was a little more well done than I would have liked, but was delicious nonetheless.

My friend opted for an edgier choice – pan-roasted cod fillet on a bed of peas, broad beans and bacon with a white wine cream sauce (£12).

He was impressed by the wine sauce and his dish quickly vanished. Funnily enough exactly the same thing happened to a couple of excellent side dishes we ordered – spicy Cajun chips and crisp onion rings (both £3).

Too full for a dessert each but too greedy to miss out, we shared a baked vanilla cheesecake drizzled with red berry coulis (£5). This was rich and tasty but not too heavy.

Tiger Tiger may have been replaced by Mansion House but the quality on offer is still burning bright.

Win a Karaoke night out and dinner at Glasseries fo you and 3 friends
