ONE of Scotland’s most famous actors is coming to Glasgow to star in a revolutionary new version of a Shakespeare classic.

Spy Kids’ actor Alan Cumming is to appear at Glasgow’s Tramway theatre to star in Macbeth.

Having made his theatre debut at 20 in Macbeth at the Tron in 1985, he returns to the city for a one-man performance under National Theatre of Scotland director John Tiffany, in which he plays a patient reliving the story of Macbeth captured on CCTV cameras in a psychiatric unit.

Cumming has become one of Hollywood’s biggest Scots screen exports, with his work in such films as The Smurfs, Son of the Mask and Garfield: The Movie leading to him receiving an OBE in 2009.

He says he has been obsessed with Macbeth for as long as he can remember, adding: “It was the first Shakespeare I ever read, the first I was ever in and it continues to haunt and inspire me.

“The only thing more exciting, challenging and terrifying than this play is to do a one-man version of it with these great directors and this great company and to perform it in Glasgow and New York.”

Macbeth runs from Wednesday, June 13 to Saturday, June 30 at the Tramway Theatre.
